A wedding celebration in Bolangir district turned into grief when a groom’s procession car ran over his father, killing him on the spot and critically injuring another family member. The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Mandal village under Belpada block.
The deceased has been identified as Chaitanya Bag. According to reports, as the baraat moved forward with music and dancing, Bag was walking ahead of the groom’s vehicle, leading the celebratory procession.
Witnesses said the groom’s car suddenly rolled forward and climbed over Bag, leaving him grievously injured. Despite immediate rescue efforts and hospitalisation at the Belpada Community Health Centre, doctors declared him dead.
Another Relative Critically Injured
In the same accident, the elder brother of the bride was also struck by the vehicle. He suffered severe injuries and was shifted to Bhimabhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir, where he remains in critical condition.
A family member of the deceased accused the person handling the vehicle of negligence and said the death could have been avoided. The relative alleged that the car was not being driven by the designated driver at the time of the mishap.
“The car hit my brother-in-law. It was moving slowly but made a sudden swerve. A person standing in front of the car moved away, and the vehicle then crushed my brother-in-law.
The driver was out to have tiffin. The car’s owner was driving. It does not matter how he drove; he ultimately did kill someone,” he said.
