Government seeks report over school wrestlers’ train travel incident; Action promised against negligence

The Odisha government has sought an explanation over the incident in which state-level school wrestlers were forced to travel near train toilets while going to Uttar Pradesh. Taking serious note of the alleged gross negligence towards the sportspersons, the School and Mass Education Department has asked the Director of Secondary Education to submit a detailed report.

The department has emphasized ensuring that such incidents are not repeated in the future. It has also decided to hold a coordination meeting with railway authorities in this regard. Confirming the development, the School and Mass Education Department stated that a thorough inquiry will be conducted.

The Minister said the facts of the incident will be verified and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the negligence.

As per information, 18 wrestlers and four teachers had travelled to Ballia in Uttar Pradesh to participate in the 69th National School Wrestling Championship. Due to non-confirmation of train tickets, the wrestlers were reportedly forced to travel sitting near the train toilets and returned under the same conditions.

After videos of the train journey went viral on social media, the incident triggered widespread outrage across various quarters. Following this, the Director of Secondary Education has been asked to submit a detailed report on the matter.
