Berhampur: With the union ministry of environment and forests giving its green signal, the construction of the three kilometre long to convert the Gopalpur port into an all-weather port commenced from today amid much enthusiasm.Commerce minister Sanjiv Sahoo today laid the foundation of the road on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnamee.

Gopalpur port which was inaugurated in 1985, however, came to a grinding halt in 2000 after the Supercyclone. The port handled cargo only for four months in a year after it was handed over to a private party. Commerce minister Sanjiv Sahoo has assured that the government would soon provide the necessary land for early completion of the port work. The port required over two thousand acres of land while it has thus far been able to acquire just 500 acres. 

The managing director of the Gopalpur port, Prasanna Kumar Panigrahi told media persons that the project woould be completed in 2012 with an investment of Rs. 1250 crores.
