Bhubaneswar: Former Solicitor General of India and eminent lawyer Gopal Subramaniam was today conferred with doctor of laws Honoris Causa by the Central University of Odisha at a function here on Saturday.
 
Receiving the honour, Subramaniam said the award was the "greatest honour" in his life and vowed to strive to be of the use to the society.
 
A seminar titled "National Symposium on University Legal Education: Need of the Hour" was also organized on the occasion. This was inaugurated by Kalyanjyoti Sengupta, Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.
 
Sengupta laid down the salient features of Indian constitution describing India as a "constitutional democracy." He opined that the Central Universitys law school has an important role to play to make the tribals aware of their rights and duties.
 
Surabhi Banerjee, vice-chancellor of the University, traced the development of the Central University in Koraput and said the topic for the conference was chosen with the mission and vision of the University to establish a quality law school in the state.
