Bhubaneswar: Another attempt to smuggle gold at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here was thwarted when sleuths of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs seized the precious yellow metal worth Rs 8 lakh from a youth of Mohali on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, the Customs official intercepted the youth who arrived from Bangkok in an Air India flight AI-339 at the airport here.

After a thorough search of the youth's body and baggage, the sleuths found one gold 'kada' and one gold chain of foreign origin. The recovered gold weighs 249.350 grams and valued at around Rs 8 lakh.

The sleuths have detained the youth for interrogation, official sources said.

This is the second seizure of gold in the past three days. On Thursday, the Customs Department officials had seized 355.120 grams gold worth over Rs 11 lakh. The gold was being smuggled in powder form by passenger who hailed from Kerela.

As per the official release of the Customs department, four oval shape capsules were concealed inside the person’s rectum which was detected during frisking. After opening the four capsules, brown colour paste was found inside the pack and gold was recovered in mixed powder form.
