Girl student attempts self-immolation in Odisha; condition critical

In a deeply distressing incident, a girl student allegedly attempted self-immolation in the Lanjiberna area under Rajgangpur Police limits of Sundargarh district on Friday night. The shocking occurrence has left the entire locality devastated and in disbelief.

According to reports, the girl, a Plus-3 second-year student, sustained severe burn injuries after the attempt. She was rushed to Rourkela’s IGH, where she is currently battling for life. Doctors have stated that nearly 90 per cent of her body has been burnt, and her condition remains extremely critical as she undergoes intensive treatment.

Police have detained a male friend of the victim for questioning in connection with the incident. However, the exact motive behind the girl’s extreme step is still unknown. Western Range DIG has informed that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover what led to the tragedy.

Family members have claimed that the girl had received threatening phone calls prior to the incident, raising further questions about possible intimidation or external pressure. Authorities are expected to probe these allegations as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident has cast a sombre shadow over the region, with residents expressing shock and grief over the girl’s critical state and the circumstances surrounding the case.

"My daughter was studying when suddenly I heard her scream. I rushed towards her room and found her engulfed in flames, crying for help. In desperation, I tried to save her by wrapping her with a blanket," said the victim’s mother.
