Deogarh: In a shocking incident, a minor girl was killed after two women allegedly set her ablaze for alleged theft of pomegranates from a garden in Balinali village in Barkote police limits of Deogarh district.

What’s more intriguing, the owner of the garden did not set the girl afire, but the crime was allegedly committed by the mothers of two of the deceased’s friends who had accompanied her to pluck the fruits.

According to sources, deceased Rinki Behera had gone to pluck the fruits along with her friends –Pooja Sahu, Twinkle Sahu and Jhunu--from a garden which their families do not own. When the farm owner started making inquiries, the family members of all the girls decided not to divulge the names of the girls to the farm owner.

It’s alleged that Rinki disclosed the names of her friends to the farm owner. Incensed over Rinki’s disclosure, the mothers of her friends—Sulochana Sahu and Mali Sahu—went to the deceased’s house in the absence of her mother and later Rinki was found in a critical condition.

The police have detained the two women suspected to have set the minor girl afire. The police are investigating the case.

Deogarh SDPO Prashant Mishra said, “A complaint has been lodged against Sulochana Sahu and Mali Sahu. We are investigating how the girl sustained serious burn injuries and later succumbed to her injuries”.
