In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, police on Sunday exposed a new modus operandi of cannabis smuggling in Odisha’s Sonepur district and arrested two persons in connection with the case.
The operation was uncovered during routine checking on National Highway 57 along the Sonepur–Bolangir route. Police intercepted a car that was being towed by another vehicle, initially appearing to have broken down. The arrangement was allegedly intended to avoid suspicion.
Upon conducting a thorough search, police discovered a large quantity of cannabis concealed inside a specially designed secret cabin installed in the car. The hidden compartment had been crafted in a manner aimed at evading detection.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sonepur, Narayan Nayak, said, “A secret cabin had been installed in the vehicle in a very proper manner for smuggling cannabis. This shows that cannabis smuggling is being carried out in a disguised way. Now that they have been caught, they will face the consequences.”
