Rayagada: A huge amount of ganja plants were destroyed in a joint raid by the excise and police officials today at Pattaguda kudia under Pattaguda forest division in Rayagada district.
 
Acting on the direction of district magistrate, a team comprising excise and police officials conducted raid on the cultivation of illegal plants at Pattaguda kudia. According to Excise superintendent, the ganja plants worth over Rs 5 cr were grown illegally in 11 acres of land which were destroyed by setting fire.
 
As the area being remote in the Rayagada- Gajapati district border, it has become a safe haven for the ganja smugglers. They reportedly smuggled the contrabands cultivating acres of lands here.
 
Notably, the excise department raided the illegal cultivation in the area three times in the last two months and torched the plants.
