Bhubaneswar: Condition of both the rich and poor has become the same in the Smart City Bhubaneswar in the aftermath of Cyclone Fani as everyone from slum dwellers to those living in posh area are facing a harrowing time amidst severe water scarcity and cash crunch for last three days.
Extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani devastated the State capital tearing apart its critical infrastructure especially power, telecom and water supply in the city after making landfall near Puri on May 3.
In the aftermath of the cyclone, the administration had assured to restore normalcy within a day or two but it has failed to walk its talks.
While thousands of residents in the capital city are making beelines near tube-wells and supply tankers to get water, power outage has made the capital city plunge into darkness.
Not only that, severe cash crunch has also hit the Smart City hard making people to queue up in huge numbers outside money kiosks as most of the ATMs are inaccessible due to unavailability of power supply or internet.

Students from other states, studying at various institutes in Bhubaneswar have been the worst hit post cyclone. Due to acute cash shortage, they are not able to return to their home state and unavailability of online money transaction has doubled their sufferings.
Situation at the petrol pumps is also the same. While most of the fuel outlets have become non-functional, some filling stations where the oil is available are overcrowded. People are forced to wait in queues for long hours to get fuel.
Businesses in the capital city have been strongly hit following the cyclone with small to large shops and establishments downing their shutters. The situation has compounded the problem of local residents who are now staring at severe shortage of food and other necessary materials.
With normal life completely paralysed, resentment is brewing among the residents of the city over the slow speed of the restoration works.
