At Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital in Odisha, Umakanta Mahapatra, a security guard with nine years of service, has become a symbol of compassion and dedication. Beyond his regular duties, he assists patients, cares for the elderly, and supports the destitute, earning admiration from the community and inspiring local youth to serve society selflessly.

Mahapatra often helps with basic patient care and supports elderly individuals visiting the hospital, reportedly. He ensures that those in need receive attention and necessary assistance. Despite working as a security guard, he undertakes tasks such as assisting the needy and facilitating the cremation of unclaimed bodies.

Sharing his experience, Mahapatra said, “During my nine years of work, I have continued to help and assist anyone in need. I believe we are meant to support others, whether human or animal. I have conducted the cremation of many homeless persons who had no one to perform their last rites and assisted patients during the COVID-19 period when others were hesitant to approach them.”

Extending Help To Animals

His involvement also includes helping stray animals and cattle found near the roads. 

Collective Social Initiative

Mahapatra’s efforts have led to the formation of Debaduta Seva Parishad in Nayagarh. The organisation now includes several local youths who participate in social service activities, reflecting a structured approach to community assistance and volunteer engagement.

A volunteer from the organisation stated, “We also work to protect animals. When we find stranded cattle, we move them off the road and feed them when required.”
