The Odisha Assembly on Thursday witnessed a historic moment as President Droupadi Murmu visited the House for the first time after assuming the highest constitutional office of the country.
Her arrival at the Assembly holds special emotional significance, marking a full-circle moment in her political journey, from serving as an MLA in the same House to returning today as the President of India.
President Murmu served as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2009. Representing the Rairangpur constituency; she was elected twice, earning the trust and support of the people of Mayurbhanj district.
During her tenure as an MLA, she also held important ministerial responsibilities in the state government. From 2000 to 2002, she worked as the Minister of Commerce and Transport, and from 2002 to 2004, she served as the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development.

Her contributions in both departments were widely acknowledged.
In recognition of her efficient legislative work and service, she was honoured with the Best Legislator Award in 2007. Her political journey continued to rise as she assumed the role of Governor of Jharkhand in 2015, becoming the first woman tribal leader to hold the post in the state.
The President’s visit to the Odisha Assembly today is seen as a proud and inspirational moment for the state. Leaders across party lines welcomed her warmly, acknowledging the remarkable path she has travelled, from a legislator representing a tribal constituency to the country’s first tribal woman President.
President Murmu’s presence in the Assembly evoked nostalgia and admiration, underlining her enduring connection with Odisha and its people.
