Cuttack: After a brief lull, the residents of Cuttack are yet again in a state of panic with more than 20 fresh cases of jaundice being reported from Ganga Mandir area here.
The local residents have alleged that despite jaundice surfacing in ward no 13, 18 and 19 of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) every year, neither Cuttack district administration nor the civic body has taken any step to check the outbreak of the vector-borne decease.
“Despite our repeated requests, no steps are being taken by the concerned officials to clean the area including the drainage. Neither do they distribute medicines. We are unable to afford the medical expenses as we are poor,” said relative of a jaundice affected youth.
“Crores of rupees were sanctioned to change the pipeline here. Why then no work has been done yet? Where is the money? Particularly, people of this area are falling prey to jaundice as they use contaminated water due to unavailability of pure drinking water,” alleged former CMC corporator, Charulata Sahu.
CMC Commissioner Ananya Das, on the other hand, claimed that the civic body has already chalked out strategies to check the jaundice outbreak in the city. “We (CMC) have planned to distribute Halogen tablets among the people. In some places we have already distributed. We will also do water chlorination in the area where open wells are present. House to house awareness program will also be launched to sensitise the people on how to avoid falling prey to jaundice,” she said.
