Bhubaneswar: While more rains are in the offing for Odisha in the coming days, heightened lightning activities will hit the State for today and tomorrow.
In addition to the likely development of a cyclonic circulation over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal (near Odisha coast) by around August 22, which will bring widespread rainfall in Odisha on August 23-24, a Low Pressure Area (LOPAR) is likely to form in east-central Bay of Bengal (BoB) by around August 27. The new system will enhance heavy rainfall activities in Odisha during the last week of August.
As per the data available with IMD, while the development of a fresh cyclonic circulation near Odisha coast on August 22 will see an enhanced rainfall over the State during the next two days (August 23 & 24), a LOPAR will form in the east-central BoB and north Andaman Sea on around August 27 & 28.
An analysis of IMD weather models shows high relative vorticity (spinning of air) in the area in the BoB. Strong Low level convergence (Net horizontal airflow to an area at surface level in lower atmosphere) of air and upper divergence (Net outflow of air in upper atmosphere) are also observed. These air-flow conditions point to making of a LOPAR in the region.
IMD predictions have therefore forecast normal rainfall over Odisha during the remaining weeks in Odisha, though the rainfall amount will reduce in most parts of India.
Meanwhile, since the curvature of a trough ( an elongated U-shaped low pressure area over land) originates from the current LOPAR over East Uttar Pradesh and passes through Bihar, Odisha , North Andhra to Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall is likely in all districts in south interior Odisha, with very heavy rainfall at some places in Rayagada and Gajapati districts. Rainfall has also been predicted at some places in the north interior districts like Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada and Bolangir.
However, the Skymet warning shows along with rain, lightning will also strike places like Dharakote, Sanakhemundi, Sheragarh, Digapahandi, Patrapada, Chikti and Berhampur in Ganjam district and at many places in Nayagarh, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Sambalpur, Angul, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts.
