Freedom fighter dies while leading rally

Jajpur: A freedom fighter died on Sunday while leading a rally on the anniversary of protest against police action in 1942 on this day. Brundaban Tripathy (92) breathed his last at Balipada under Barchana police station of Jajpur district due to cardiac arrest caused by exhaustion, family sources said quoting a doctor.

Tripathy was the President of Jajpur district freedom fighters` association. A rally was being taken out from Gajendrapur to Thakarbaba Ashram at Balipada when he fainted about 100 meters from the destination. He was declared brought dead at the public health centre at Gajendrapur, hospital sources said.

Seven persons including one Jagannath Mandhata of Gajendrapur village were jailed on this day in 1942 after being influenced by Mahatma Gandhi to participate in the Quit India movement.  An association christened `Jagannath Mandhata Smruti Sansad` was formed, and every year the freedom fighters of the district observed the anniversary by taking out a rally and holding a memorial meeting.
In the rally today state freedom fighters` association President Purushottam Nayak, BJD Rajya Sabha member Baishnab Charan Parida, NCP MLA Amar Satpathy and about 30 freedom fighters participated. The participants held a meeting and observed two minutes silence to pay homage to the departed freedom fighter.
