Berhampur: The Berhampur Police has busted a cyber-fraud gang and arrested five persons including four girls for duping people of lakhs of rupees online. According to sources, one Deepak Panda of Berhampur lodged a complaint alleging that he was duped of nearly Rs one lakh on promise of a lucrative return of Rs 5 lakh.

Acting on his complaint, police launched a probe in this connection. A special team of Berhampur Cyber Police arrested three accused from Kendrapara and one each from Sambalpur and Puri.

After detailed interrogation, police have unearthed a massive cyber fraud racket. Police revealed that not only Deepak but around 2000 people across Odisha have been duped in a similar manner.

Elaborating on the modus operandi of the accused, police said that the girls used to lure prospective clients by speaking to them on phone. After winning their confidence in tactful manner, they seek queries on certification and clearance of their organization and later ask them to deposit money.

“These days each and every police station is registering cases of online fraud. But we are trying our best to make people aware about online transactions through community policing, SMS, social media engagement, and other campaigns,” said Berhampur SP, Pinak Mishra.
