Former Congress legislator Akshaya Acharya, who represented the Nilgiri Assembly constituency twice, passed away late on Thursday night at the age of 78. He was undergoing treatment for cancer for a prolonged period, according to sources familiar with his medical condition.

Acharya’s health reportedly deteriorated late last night at around 2 am, following which he was admitted to the Nilgiri hospital. He was later referred to Balasore after his condition worsened, where he was declared dead by doctors.

A senior leader of the Indian National Congress in Balasore district, Acharya served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Nilgiri during two non-consecutive terms, first from 1980 to 1985 and later from 1995 to 2000. During his political career, he remained associated with Congress organisational activities in the region for several decades.

Strong Political Career

Akshaya Acharya was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Nilgiri constituency on a Congress ticket during the early 1980s and returned to the Assembly again in the mid-1990s. His tenure coincided with key political transitions in the state, and he remained an active political figure in Nilgiri even after completing his second term.

However, no official statement detailing condolence messages from party leadership was available at the time of filing this report.

Acharya is survived by family members. Details regarding his last rites and funeral arrangements were yet to be officially announced. According to hospital records, Akshaya Acharya was 78 years old at the time of his death, and his demise occurred during treatment following a sudden deterioration in his health late Thursday night.
