Bhubaneswar/Berhampur: Former Congress MLA from Sanakhemundi Ramesh Jena was arrested by Berhampur Police following seizure of two guns and five rounds of live bullets during a raid at his Berhampur residence.

During the search operations at Jena's house, the police also found more than Rs 10 lakh cash.

A top police official on condition of anonymity said connections between Jena and the arrested Dhalasamant brothers cannot be ruled out and investigation is also on in this direction.

Earlier in the day, a special squad of Berhampur Police detained Jena and two of his associates from an apartment in Khanadagiri area in Bhubaneswar during the wee hours for their involvement in a number of criminal activities.

Police also seized three mobile phones and weapons from their possession.

Meanwhile, DGP KB Singh said Jena was involved in manufacturing of fake gutka, milk powders and tender fixing.

In a related development, supporters of Corporator R. Muralimohan, was detained along with Jena, gheraoed the Berhampur Town Police Station and attempted to enter the police station forcibly. To dissuade the agitators, police resorted to a mild lathicharge.

Notably, a number of criminal cases are pending against the former MLA. On February 11 in 2011, when Ramesh was residing in Bhubaneswar, police had raided his residence. During the raid, there was a gunfight between his aides and police.
