Jajpur: At least five persons were killed and another injured seriously when the car in which they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck during the wee hours today, police said. The accident took place near Saroi village under Dharmasala police station on NH-5, about 40 km from here in Jajpur district.

The car was on its way to Chhenipada in Angul district from Bhadrak, where from they were returning home after attending a marriage function. The deceased have been identified as Bhagyadhar Majhi (25), Akshaya Majhi (29) of Pipala Bahala, Swapneswar Dehury (27), Bhajamana Dehury (28)and Bhagirathi Pradhan (19) all of them of Khajiramunda under Chhendipada police limits in Angul district, they said.

Later, four of the seriously injured persons were rushed to the local government hospital where doctors declared two of them brought dead. Two others were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after their condition deteriorated. One of them succumbed to injuries on the way to Cuttack.

The impact of the collision was so severe that four of its occupants including the driver of the vehicle died on the spot, said Suvendu Kumar Sinha, inspector-in-charge of Dharmasala police station. Police have seized both the vehicles. Driver and helper of the truck have fled from the scene soon after the mishap.
