Bhubaneswar: Tension erupted on the premises of Odisha Manganese & Minerals Ltd (OMM) at Koida of Sundargarh district on Thursday as private security guards allegedly opened fire at agitated workers of the company, leaving five injured.

Sources said trouble started when the workers turned violent while having discussion with mine authorities over payment of salary arrears and free medicine that led to the firing incident.

Meanwhile, CPM and CITU called for Koida bandh tomorrow protesting against the firing.

Notably, earlier this week, there was another incident of confrontation between police and workers of a coal transportation company at Belpahar in Jharsuguda district. In the clash, two workers of the company were killed and 16 others, including six police personnel, were injured.
