Cuttack: Five persons were arrested on Monday by the Cuttack police in connection with the gruesome murder of Keshab Behera, secretary of the Seikh Bazar puja committee. The silver city police which claimed to crack the Sunday murder case also suspect rivalry between two gangs led to the death of Behera.
 
“It is suspected that Keshab was killed over the auction of shops at Chandi Mandir, which the associates of gangster Tito wanted to gain hold of,” DCP (Cuttack), Praveen Kumar said.
 
According to sources, Behera earned enmity few months back when both the groups wanted hefty gains from the auction of cycle stands during IPL matches in Barbati stadium.
 
Meanwhile, confirming the involvement of two rival groups in the crime, DGP Prakash Mishra said, “We have got some major clues in the incident and the case is a gang rivalry.”
 
The millennium city police has also seized two pistols and seven live cartridges from the accused identified as Vellar alias Biswantha Behera, Mantu alias Keshav Behera, Litu alias Debraj Behrea, Chakuli alias Prakash Behera, Muna alias Shekih Laden.
 
All the accused have been forwarded to court.
 
On Sunday, at around 8 am, four motorcycle-borne goons chased and shot Keshab, while he was returning home on his two-wheeler.
 
Keshab took five bullets in his chest, back and thighs and was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital. He was later shifted to a private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
 
Hours after the incident, more than 20 goons on motorcycles hurled crude bombs to terrorise people at Rovers Street near Seikh Bazaar. Police suspect the bombings could be linked to Keshab’s murder.
