Paradip: In an unfortunate incident, three fishermen were killed and seven others sustained severe burn injuries after a trawler they were fishing in caught fire in the deep sea in the wee hours of Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Gopal Haldar, Balaram Barman and Mahadev Behera.

The tragic incident occurred when the engine of the machine boat developed some mechanical snag due to excess heat, fellow fishermen said. The Indian Coast Guard personnel were immediately informed and they swung into action rescuing all the victims in a semi-burnt condition, they added.

All of them were rushed to Paradip port hospital where three of them were declared dead. Three out of seven other burn victims have been shifted to SCB medical college when their condition reportedly deteriorated.

Sources said, about 10 fishermen ventured into the sea for fishing two days ago. They were fishing at least 20 to 30 km off the shore while the ill-fated incident took place.
