The transplant involved a middle-aged male patient suffering from decompensated liver failure caused by alcoholic liver disease. The recipient underwent a living donor liver transplant, with his younger brother donating 40 per cent of his liver. The surgery was conducted on December 20 and lasted nearly 14 hours, involving a multidisciplinary team of more than 50 medical professionals.

Complex Procedure After Years Of Preparation

Explaining the clinical and logistical challenges involved, Prof. Manas Kumar Panigrahi, Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said to ANI that the procedure was the culmination of sustained preparation over several years.

“Liver transplantation surgery is challenging, and we have been working over the last two to three years to develop the infrastructure and other requirements,” Panigrahi said. “Now, after completing that infrastructure and with the support of our liver transplant monitoring team, we were able to conduct this transplant.”

He said the recipient’s condition required careful optimisation before surgery. “The patient had liver failure with ascites, which means fluid accumulation in the abdomen, along with an umbilical hernia. We reduced the abdominal fluid to ensure that the surgery could be performed safely,” he added.
