Berhampur: The Odisha Fire Services personnel on Saturday inspected safety arrangements at various coaching centres of Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Balasore. The move comes in the wake of recent fire tragedy at a coaching centre in Surat in which over 22 students were killed.

As many as 10 teams of the Berhampur unit of the Odisha Fire Services Department conducted inspections at different coaching centres in Silk City. Besides, the fire personnel also conducted mock drills at the institutions to create awareness among the students, teachers and owners on how to prevent fire mishaps and carryout rescue operations.

Such simultaneous inspection and awareness drives were conducted under the supervision of Inspector General of Fire Services Department Rajesh Kumar.

“Today, we are conducting fire safety inspections at different prominent coaching centres of the city. We are also creating awareness among the students on several aspects relating to fire safety as many of them don’t know how to use fire extinguishers though such equipments are installed at many institutions,” said Rajesh Kumar.

“After completing the inspection, notices will be served to the institutions if team detects lapses in fire safety measures. The institutes will be given time to upgrade fire safety mechanisms. Subsequently, action will be taken against them if they don’t comply to notice within the stipulated deadline,” he added.

The fire officials also conducted such fire preventive and fire safety inspections in different coaching centres in Sambalpur, Rourkela and Balsore today.
