A major fire erupted near Guru Kelucharan Park in the Damana area of Bhubaneswar on Sunday, triggering panic among residents and commuters passing through the locality. The incident occurred when a large heap of dry leaves and waste materials in the vicinity suddenly caught fire, officials said.
Strong winds and the presence of dry vegetation caused the flames to spread rapidly into the nearby forested area. Within minutes, thick smoke engulfed parts of the neighbourhood, reducing visibility and alarming local residents.
Fire Services officials said the situation became critical as the fire started moving towards a denser section of the forest, raising fears of further spread.

A team from the Chandrasekharpur Fire Station swiftly reached the site after receiving an emergency call. Firefighters began spraying water and creating buffer zones to prevent the blaze from advancing deeper into the green patch. The team continued its efforts for several hours, working to bring the fire under full control.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire may have originated from discarded dry leaves or waste materials being set alight, though the exact cause is yet to be determined.
The incident highlights the rising risks of fire outbreaks during dry conditions, particularly in areas surrounded by vegetation. Authorities have urged residents to avoid burning waste and to report even small fires immediately to prevent such incidents from escalating.
