Bhubaneswar: A fire broke out in a scrap yard in the premises of railway carriage repair workshop at Mancheswar area here on Thursday night, railway officials said.

According to reports reaching, eight fire service vehicles and 10 private water tankers have been pressed into service to control the blaze which erupted in the yard, away from the main workshop, an East Coast Railway (ECoR) spokesman said. Eyewitnesses say, the fire broke out at around 9 pm on Thursday.

"Lack of water stocked in the yard and proper road communication to the area posed hindrance in extinguishing the flame. Still efforts are on to contain it", Fire officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi said.

No casualty or injury to anyone was reported due to the fire as the yard is an open space where scraps, garbage and other wastes are dumped, he said.

Although the exact reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained, officials suspect it might have spread from the sparking of 33 kv electric wire near the site.

Immediate steps have been taken to contain the fire which was prevented from spreading to areas close to the main workshop and other operational sites, he said.
