Bhubaneswar: Financial fraudsters be alert! Now it will not be easy to escape overnight after trapping gullible people and mopping up deposits from them with a false assurance of high returns of their investments.

The economic offence wing (EOW) of the state crime branch is going to introduce a toll-free number to help people report information about financial irregularities.

“We have requested the Government of India to provide a toll-free number for EOW through which people can not only inform but make complaints about any sort of financial frauds or suspicious transactions,” ADG (Crime Branch) BK Sharma said.

“It is observed that due to lack of awareness and proper enquiry about financial institutions involved in money circulation schemes, people mainly from the undeveloped areas have become victims to many fraudsters. They lure these people offering high returns and gradually trap them. Now we believe that this number will help us to catch big cats,” added Sharma.

Notably the wing since its inception in February last has so far brought to fore as many as 30 high profile scams to the tune of Rs 1500 crore involving money laundering, land fraud, bank transactions.

Investors would also be made aware about frauds being committed by financial agencies, Sharma stated.

Besides, the wing is also contemplating to initiate poster campaign across the state to raise awareness of financial scams.

In the state capital, after the Hi-Tech group's alleged multi-crore land scam came to limelight, the Crime Branch of the State police flooded with allegations of financial frauds committed by unscrupulous agencies.
