Baripada: One female elephant was on Saturday found dead near village Lalpani under Dukuna forest range on the foothills of Similipal in Mayurbhanj district.

The forest officials suspect that the 12-year-old female elephant might have been poisioned by some poacher. The decomposed body was lying near a water body, said Bijay Kumar Nayak, the divisional forest officer (DFO), Baripada.

The DFO said the postmortem report would reveal the cause of the elephant's death.
