Sambalpur: Setting a second exemplary punishment for rapist-killers in the country in a span of three months, a fast track court in Sambalpur on Thursday sentenced death penalty to a man for rape and murder of a 3-year-old girl. The court on last Friday had convicted Thidu Munda (26), based on circumstantial evidence and statements of witnesses.
 
Earlier on October 8, the court had awarded capital punishment to Pradip Dalei (28) after convicting him for raping and killing an 8-yr-old girl who was lured and promised by Dalei to buy her food.
 
“The accused has been convicted under Sec 376/302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Sec 302 of the IPC he has been sentenced to death till confirmation of High Court,” additional public prosecutor Subrat Mohanty said.
 
Sambalpur Additional district judge (fast track) Ashok Kumar Panda ordered that Thidu Munda of Budhiapalli village in this district be hanged to death for murdering the girl under section 302 of IPC.
 
The court also awarded the convict life imprisonment under section 376(F)(2) of IPC for raping a minor girl.
On October 11 last, police had arrested Munda, a resident of Mundapara village under Thelkolei police station of Sambalpur district, on charges of raping and killing Samari Munda, the victim. According to police, he was arrested seven days after the incident.
 
Police recovered body of the girl from a nearby jungle who, according to complaint of the family members was missing from her house since October 4.
 
A case was registered in this regard and after medical reports police confirmed that she was raped before being strangled.
 
Against the backdrop of calls for speedy disposal of rape cases after the December 16 Delhi gangrape incident, Court officials said it took less than four months for the judge to conclude the trial.
 
Ten days after being set up to try cases of sexual offences against women, a Dwarka fast-track court in Delhi on December 15 gave the death sentence to a 56-year-old farmhouse guard for raping and killing a three-year-old girl in April 2011.
 
On Januray 11, a lower court in Cuttack district had sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl.
