Farmers shun paddy procurement over faulty weighing machine

Angul: Farmers in Angul turned away from the mandi near Patrapada Seva Samanvaya Samiti office in Chendipada block of Angul district today after alleging faults in the weighing machines.

According to sources, the farmers found that the two-needle based weighing machines being used to weigh paddy at the mandi were faulty showing 3 to 4 kilograms less weight per quintal. Following the allegations, the farmers stopped the millers from weighing the paddy.

The authorities at the mandi however, refuted the charges following which the farmers closed down the mandi.

“The millers are saying that the weighing instrument was provided by Regulated Market Committee (RMC). There seems to be a reduction of up to eight kilograms,” said Sushila Sahu, a farmer.

The concerned authorities were not available for comments on the allegations levelled by the farmers.
