Sonepur: Farmers of Birmaharajpur in Sonepur district called for a 12-hour strike in the town today protesting non-fulfilment of their various demands.

As per reports, farmers under the aegis of Birmaharajpur Farmer Council are observing the dawn-to-dusk shutdown demanding probe into irregularities in renovation works of Harihar Jor main canal and construction of a new canal on its left portion, lifting water tax and provision of compensation for famine and Chakada (brown plant hopper) infestation in crops.

The agitating farmers have alleged that although they have repeatedly brought forward their demands before the district administration, the latter had taken no action.

Due to the strike, vehicular traffic has been hit while all government and non-government offices, banks, shops and market have remained closed; however, educational institutions and emergency services have remained unaffected.
