Bhadrak: From adulterated ghee to lubricants, Odisha has turned into a manufacturing hub of spurious consumer goods. This was again evident after police on Saturday night busted a fake tobacco (zarda) manufacturing unit in Bhadrak.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Puruna Bazar police station raided two units at Chandan Nagar and Sarkar Nagar and seized large quantities of raw materials used to prepare spurious zarda.

Four persons have been detained from the spot and they are being interrogated, police said.

The raids were conducted following allegations over trademark violation and fake zarda production that had become rampant in Bhadrak.

Sources said zarda with low quality tobacco products was being prepared by using different chemicals at the unit. Later, the low quality products were pushed into the market using labels of different reputed brands.
