Koraput: Three persons were arrested by Salur police from Vijaynagar in the bordering area of Koraput and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, on charges of extorting money from people by posing as Maoists.

According to police sources, one bike, one mobile phone and around Rs 1.5 lakhs were seized from their possession. However, police is yet to recover the money they had looted from various persons.

"They have plundered more than Rs 9 lakhs from people by posing as Maoists," said a senior police official.

A few months back, the Town Police in Rayagada had arrested two persons for allegedly running a fake Maoist organisation and demanding extortion money. The accused K Madhav Rao of Kasturinagar and V Jagannath of JK Pur area had reportedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from a contractor under the name of a Maoist leader Chalapati.
