The Odisha Excise Department on Friday conducted a raid at the bar of Hotel Indraprastha following allegations of sale of expired liquor. The establishment is located on Railway Station Road in Bolangir.

According to officials, customers had complained that expired liquor was being sold at the bar. Acting on the complaint, the Excise team carried out a surprise inspection and seized cartons of expired beer from the premises.

Documents examined during the raid reportedly revealed that the liquor had been procured from the government English liquor warehouse in Sonepur.

Irregularity Report Filed Against Owner

The department registered an SIR, Severe Irregularity Report, against the bar owner for failing to comply with mandatory procedures.

Excise Department Deputy Commissioner Sitakanta Muduli said, “As per law, the owner should have informed us after the liquor expired in December. They had kept the expired liquor aside in a room and stated that it would be destroyed. There were 30 cartons of beer, approximately 234 litres, which the Superintendent has the power to destroy with the Collector’s permission.”

He further stated, “Since the owner had not informed us about the expired product, we filed an irregularity report. We have also fined the owner Rs 50,000 as per the rules.”

Further Action As Per Rules

Officials said the seized stock will be dealt with in accordance with prescribed procedures. The matter remains under departmental scrutiny.
