Ex Odisha DGP Marik loses Jharkhand bypoll

Bhubaneswar: Sanjeev Marik, former Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, has lost the Godda Assembly constituency seat in Jharkhand, the result of which was announced today.

Marik, who had joined Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) days before the tribal-dominated seat went to polls, managed to get 18,337 votes.

BJP’s Amit Mandal, son of Raghunandan Mandal, who was the sitting Party MLA from Godda, defeated Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Sanjay Yadav by a margin of 34,551 votes, defeating. Mandal polled 83,987 votes while Yadav garnered 49,436 votes. Yadav was supported by Congress, Janata Dal (United), Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) and Left Parties.

The by-election was necessitated after the death of Raghunandan Mandal, a political greenhorn who represented BJP from Godda, in January this year.
