Bhubaneswar: In a gruesome incident, a retired army officer allegedly murdered his wife and cut her body into pieces before hiding the chopped parts inside a suitcase at Nayapali area in the State capital. The accused Somnath Parida has been arrested by the city police on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Usashi Parida, police said.

Even as the high profile murder case is suspected to have occurred at least 15 days ago, police came to know about the incident yesterday. The investigating officials sealed the residence of the accused and are interrogating him.

The matter came to light only after the brother of the victim visited the house and enquired about his sister and brother-in-law who did not pick up the phone call of their son staying abroad. He informed the police after failing to trace his sister at the home. He also complained about the horrible stink emanating from the house.

"Body parts were preserved with chemicals in 22 steel containers and kept in two big boxes," said Santosh Bala, Additional Commissioner of Police.

During initial interrogation accused Somnath said Usashi committed suicide after banging her head into the wall, Bala told media.

"However, our preliminary investigation does not suggest suicide," she added.
