Eviction drive by CEMC on encroached land near AG Square

Bhubaneswar:  The Central Enforcement Monitoring Committee (CEMC) comprising officials of the General Administration Department , BDA and BMC today began eviction drive to reclaim a valuable piece of land near the AG square here.

Officials of all the three departments were present on spot when the drive commenced at 6 am.The Indira English Medium School and the Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) buildings were demolished as part of the drive. The state government took possession of the one acre land after 30 years of legal battle, said reports.

“They started the demolition without serving us any notice. But since it is being done for the benefit of public, we are not opposing it,” said Umesh Nanda, a NYK staff.

“It was after 30 years that the government succeeded in acquiring this piece of land.  It will be used to construct the Bhubaneswar Urban Museum -a first of its kind in the country,” informed BMC Joint Commissioner Ramakant Sethi said.

The demolition was still on when the reports last came in. Police personnel were deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident. Earlier in the first week of May, the CEMC had carried out a similar eviction drive in Patrapada and Bhagabanpur in Khandagiri and Tamando area.  Unauthorized constructions over 6.5 acres were removed for development of a depot-cum bus terminal for city bus services.
