Eleven Odisha labourers harassed in Tamil Nadu

Sundergarh: In another shocking incident which speaks volumes about the plight of Odisha labourers who are forced to migrate outside the state, 11 labourers of Chinga Jharan village under Bisra block of Sundergarh district have alleged exploitation by their employer in Tamil Nadu. The three labourers who have managed to escape from Tamil Nadu sought assistance from the district administration today.

According to sources, a middleman had lured the labourers with higher wages and took them to Tamil Nadu. As per allegations, while the labourers were assured of employment at a water bottling company, they were engaged in some other work. Moreover, the labourers were not paid wages as promised, it is alleged.

“When we reached there, the contractor employed us in a borewell vehicle. They took away our mobile phones and even thrashed us. We escaped at the first chance we got,” said one of the labourers who managed to return.

District Labour Officer, Prasant Kumar Baliarsingh said “After receiving a complaint, we have started an investigation and have issued a show-cause notice to the contractor. We are also in contact with the State government to rescue the other labourers. There are 11 labourers, out of which three have returned.”
