Sundergarh: One driver of forest department was killed in an elephant attack near Birtola under Sabdega forest range in Sundergarh district on Tuesday night. The deceased Ganesh Hota from Patropoda village was working as a driver in the DAFO office at Sabdega.

Forest Department officials had gone to the village to drive away the elephants on receiving complaints regarding elephants destroying standing crops. There were about 20 elephants including six babies.

The forest personnel had nearby driven away the herd of elephants. But an elephant attacked Ganesh from the hind who died on the spot. The forest department has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakhs for the family of Ganesh Hota.
