The rescued elephant calf, Priyanshi, who had been under the care of the Boudh Forest Department since September 13, was shifted to the Elephant Rescue Centre at Kapilash in Dhenkanal, Odisha on Friday. The transfer turned into an emotional moment for forest officials and staff, many of whom had grown deeply attached to the young calf during her stay.

Priyanshi was rescued from a canal earlier this month and received continuous care and attention from forest personnel in Boudh. Over the past few weeks, she had become part of the team’s daily life, earning affection for her playful and innocent behaviour.

According to reports, forest staff treated Priyanshi like their own child, ensuring she received proper food, water, and medical attention. They recalled comforting the calf during moments of distress, especially when she cried in search of her mother.

As the time came for her transfer, many staff members were seen holding back tears, describing the farewell as akin to parting with a family member. The officials expressed hope that Priyanshi would continue to receive the best care at the Kapilash centre and eventually thrive in her new environment.

A ranger from the Boudh Forest Department said, “Her health was stable and she used to play around happily. A veterinary doctor from Kapilash came to examine her, and under their supervision, she is being transported to the rescue centre."

He further added, "She stayed with me for nearly 15 days, and I looked after her like my own daughter. I feel very hurt and sad that she has to leave, but she must continue her life. Out of affection, we called her Priyanshi. At the rescue centre, she will be given a new name.”

An Emotional Farewell

Caretakers, too, expressed their sadness as the calf departed. “I feel extremely sorrowful that she has to leave us,” said one caretaker.

Another official noted, “She always responded to her name. I often came here just to play with her. Her departure is painful, but she now requires better care.”

The calf reportedly enjoyed her time with the staff, engaging in playful activities with them during her stay.

Rescue and Rehabilitation Background

Priyanshi’s journey to Boudh began a few days ago when she and her mother strayed from the Panchadhara hills of Athmallik towards Kusumakuhuri village. In the process, the calf accidentally fell into a canal. Though rescued by locals and handed over to the Forest Department, her mother did not accept her back.

Since then, she had been under the care of Boudh Forest officials, who formed a close bond with the young elephant before bidding her a heartfelt farewell as she was moved to Kapilash.
