Electric wire snaps, 15 pensioners injured

Khurda: It was a difference of just few minutes. The old-persons and the physically challenged persons were waiting for their turn to receive their pensions. After a while they would have gone back to their families with cash in hand for sustenance. But cruel destiny had scripted a different story for all of them. While all of them were sitting eagerly at the office of the Co-Operative Society at Padanpur under Talabasta panchayat, a speeding truck hit the check gate of the government controlled market just adjacent to the place. As a result the high tension electric overhead wire snapped and fell on the poor fellows.

Fifteen hapless persons were badly burnt due to electrocution out of which four were struggling for survival in critical conditions at the district headquarter hospital in Khurda. Among the 15 injured persons, four have been admitted to the Banki hospital, three into the Haldia hospital and another eight to the Khurda hospital.

The local tehsildar and the police had to struggle for hours to control hundreds of emotionally charged public. The situation came under control after the tehsildar assured the irate mob to provide assistance to the injured persons from the Red Cross funds.
