Doctor Lakshmi Bai turns 100; donor of Rs 3.4 crore to AIIMS Bhubaneswar receives warm wishes from President Murmu

Renowned gynaecologist Professor Dr Lakshmi Bai from Berhampur region entered her 100th year on Friday, marking the occasion with widespread admiration and warm wishes from eminent personalities. 

The centenarian doctor, who has been in the spotlight for donating her lifetime savings of Rs 3.4 crore to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, received heartfelt greetings from dignitaries on her birthday today. 

A large number of well-wishers, including authorities from AIIMS Bhubaneswar and several prominent political figures, gathered at her residence to extend birthday greetings. A celebratory cake-cutting event was held, with friends, admirers, and supporters joining in to make the moment special.

Adding to the honour, President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her wishes to Dr Lakshmi Bai on her 100th birthday, praying for her continued good health and long life.

"Her (Dr Lakshmi Bai’s) generous donation will be utilised for the treatment of patients coming to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with gynaecologic cancers, as well as for research in the field. A portion of the funds will also support community outreach programmes, with efforts focused on preventing cancer in rural areas. Additionally, the donation will contribute to initiatives aimed at cervical cancer prevention," said AIIMS Bhubaneswar Superintendent Professor Dr Dillip Parida.

It is worth mentioning that Dr Lakshmi Bai dedicated her entire life to serving patients and is remembered as one of the most compassionate medical practitioners of her time. She was among the first batch of students at the SCB Medical College in Cuttack.

Dr Lakshmi Bai has expressed the desire that her donation will be spent on the treatment of women cancer patients.
