Nayagarh: After filing a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), family members of the minor girl who lost one of her eyes allegedly due to medical negligence in Nayagarh DHH, today moved Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) demanding arrest of the accused doctor, Niramaya pharmacist and the CDMO. A complaint was also lodged at Town Police station in Nayagarh in this regard.
Victim Rinki happens to be a six-year-old girl of Nachhipur village under Daspalla block in Nayagarh district.
According to reports, Rinki's father Chandrakanta Gochhayat took her to Daspalla CHC on September 29 after she suffered a minor injury in her right eye. However, as there were no eye doctors available at the hospital, Chandrakanta rushed her to Nayagarh DHH. As per the prescription provided by the doctor there, Chandrakanta collected the required medicine drop from the Niramaya store. The doctor then suggested to use 3-5 drops twice a day. After returning home, when he instilled the drop, Rinki reportedly lost her vision. When Chandrakanta again brought her to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, he was told by doctor that the medicine prescribed was an ear drop. Subsequently, the damaged eye of the girl had to be removed at the hospital and an artificial eye was implanted, sources said.
Today after lodging a complaint with OHRC, victim's mother Bijayini Gochhayat said, "The doctor at Nayagarh hospital had checked the drop before suggesting us about its instillation. He himself poured 3-4 drops in our daughter's eye and asked us to follow the same. He had also mentioned that the prescribed medicine can be used both as an eye as well as ear drop. Our daughter's future is dark now, only because of the doctor's callousness. He should be jailed or else many like us would face the same circumstances."
Apart from demanding an adequate compensation for treatment of Rinki, her family members want police to arrest the accused doctor, pharmacist and Nayagarh chief district medical officer (CDMO).
Taking cognizance of the matter, OHRC has sought reports from CDM PHO, Nayagarh and Director of LV Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneswar within two weeks, i.e. by November 14. The Commission has also asked Superintendent of SCB Medical College & Hospital to form a committee of experts to probe and submit a report within seven days whether the prescribed medicine (CLOTRIMAZOLE & LIGNOCAINE EAR DROP) can cause harm to the extent of damage to the eye.
It is pertinent to mention that Nayagarh CDMO Sweta Mohapatra had assured Rs 15,000 for the treatment of Rinki. “The girl suffered severe penetrative injuries in her eye that could not be cured. We have ordered a probe and are aware that the family members have moved the NHRC,” the CDMO had said on Tuesday.
