Diwali celebration outside KIIT University turns chaotic, reckless fireworks display sparks panic

Despite the obvious risks, the celebrations continued for several hours without restraint. Some of the youngsters even climbed onto a fire engine

What was meant to be a night of lights and celebration turned chaotic outside the main gate of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. On Diwali night, hundreds of youngsters gathered along the public road running through the campus of the institution managed by former BJD MP Achyuta Samanta and indulged in a reckless fireworks display that soon spiralled out of control.

Dangerous Celebrations Turn Disorderly

Videos that have since gone viral on social media show large groups of youths bursting crackers dangerously close to traffic and buildings. The situation worsened when flames reportedly caught hold of roadside trees, creating panic among onlookers. Despite the obvious risks, the celebrations continued for several hours without restraint. Some of the youngsters even climbed onto a fire engine and continued their unruly behaviour.

Fire Engine Turned Dance Stage

In a shocking turn, a few youngsters climbed atop a fire engine, dancing and setting off fireworks from the vehicle itself. They were also seen holding and bursting firecrackers in their hands. Even in the presence of police and fire department officials, the chaos persisted, highlighting serious lapses in crowd control and safety enforcement. 

No Response from KIIT Authorities

When contacted, KIIT officials did not provide any comment on the incident. Meanwhile, police claimed that while the youngsters were bursting crackers, no untoward incident or injury was reported.

The night that should have symbolised joy and illumination instead reflected negligence and disorder. The viral video has reignited discussions around public safety, discipline, and responsible celebration reminding all that festivities lose meaning when safety is set ablaze.
