Dhenkanal stone quarry explosion: Two detained, police probe intensifies

Intensifying the probe into the death of two labourers following a massive explosion at an illegal stone quarry blast at Motanga Gopalpur in Dhenkanal district, police on Monday detained two persons in this connection.

The detained individuals include blasting operator Chhabindra Mahakud and one of his associates. Both are currently being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal explosion.

No Valid Permission

According to preliminary findings, the blast occurred at a stone quarry that did not possess valid permission for blasting activities. Officials revealed that mining operations and the use of explosives were being carried out illegally, in clear violation of established mining and safety regulations. The absence of mandatory approvals and safety measures is believed to have directly contributed to the tragic incident.

The explosion at the quarry resulted in the instantaneous death of two workers who were engaged in mining-related activities at the site. The incident has triggered widespread concern over illegal quarrying practices in the region and the safety of labourers working in such hazardous conditions.

Ground-Level Inspection

Earlier, the Director of Mining and Minerals had visited the blast site and conducted a ground-level inspection to assess the circumstances leading to the explosion. The inspection focused on compliance with mining laws, the availability of safety equipment, and the legality of the quarry’s operations. A detailed report is expected to be submitted to the state authorities.

Police officials stated that further details may emerge during the interrogation of the detained individuals. Authorities are also examining the possible involvement of other persons connected to the illegal quarry operations.
