Dhenkanal locals lock up pre-Independence era school objecting change of name

Dhenkanal: A pre-Independence era school in Tarajung village under Kankadahada block was today locked up by the locals protesting the decision of administration of changing the name of the school.

According to sources, the Tarajung Primary school established in 1911, has been recently merged with Makua Kateni Upper Primary school in accordance with the current norms of State government. After merging with the UP school, the Tarajung Primary School was renamed as Makua Kateni Upper Primary school.

However, unhappy with the change of name, the Tarajung residents locked up the school for an indefinite period as a mark of protest, sources said.

Sribatsa Sahu, a local, said “According to the new guidelines, the school is being renamed. If the government doesn’t pay heed to our demand, we will lock up the school as a mark of protest.”

On the other hand, the Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator (CRCC) of Tarajung, Debaraj Sahu, has stated that the school will be renamed after consultation with the villagers of the area.

“The merger was announced between Tarajung Primary school and Makua Kateni Upper primary school. As dispute over renaming has come up, the members have been called for discussions. After discussions, the decision over renaming will be taken,” Sahoo said.
