Devotees thronged the Maa Kalijai Temple in Chilika on Wednesday to celebrate Makar Sankranti, observing the sacred day with devotion and traditional rituals. The temple, situated entirely on water, is believed to fulfill the wishes of those who visit, drawing pilgrims from across the region.
The temple opened at 5 a.m., beginning the day with ceremonial procedures. The goddess was given a ritual bath before being anointed with chandan (sandalwood paste). She was then adorned with gold and silver ornaments, following the age-old traditions. Devotees were allowed to have darshan from 6 a.m. onwards, observing the goddess in her resplendent attire.

Special Pujas and Offerings
As part of the Makar Sankranti celebrations, all daily rituals are being meticulously performed, along with a special ‘Gupta Niti Puja’ that will continue throughout the night. Makar rice will also be distributed among devotees, symbolising blessings and prosperity. The Parikud Raja, in traditional attire, offers special puja to the goddess, adding to the spiritual significance of the occasion.
On this auspicious day, devotees arrive with the belief that Maa Kalijai will fulfill their wishes, making Makar Sankranti a particularly sacred event at this unique water-bound temple. The combination of traditional rituals, community participation, and deep devotion creates a vibrant festive atmosphere at Chilika.
