Development needs to be redefined: Hameed

Berhampur: Planning Commission member Syeda Saiyidain Hameed today said development needed to be redefined by balancing indicators of growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with human development.

"Our traditional way has been to bring about development for all. However, we have not reviewed the idea of development in all its nuances," she said at the Berhampur University convocation here. "We need to explore what development means to different people. What does it mean to those who are in positions of power and therefore able to effect changes… The basic question is whether the indicators of growth in GDP have gone together with an upward movement in the indicators of human development," she said citing examples of human sufferings across the country.

University chancellor and the state Governor M C Bhandare stressed on the development of higher education for the growth and development of human resources which can take responsibility for social, economic and scientific development of the country.
