Deogarh elephant death: Forest department registers cases against WESCO employees

Deogarh: The Forest department registered cases against four employees of WESCO today in connection with the electrocution of an elephant in Deogarh district on December 13. According to sources, the Forest department has filed cases against WESCO Deogarh SDO (Engineeer) Anand Kalo, JE Jitendra Sahu, Linemen Sushant Majhi and Suresh Mohanta.

The department reasoned that negligence of discom officials caused the death of the elephant and a case has been filed under section 9 and 58 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Deogarh Forest Range Officer, Kusha Charan Singh said “The equipment on the electric pole was not being maintained properly. The elephant brushed against the pole causing the wire to snap resulting in its death.”

“Investigations revealed that the elephant brushed against the pole resulting in the snapping of the wire holder causing its death,” said Satyabrata Panda, Executive Engineer, WESCO Deogarh.

A female elephant was electrocuted in a paddy field at Saloi village near Laimura Forest section under Deogarh Forest Division on December 13. Primary investigations revealed that the elephant was electrocuted.
