Demo in Bhubaneswar demanding wageboard notification

Bhubaneswar: Journalist and non-journalist employees of different news organisations staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding immediate notification and implementation of the Majithia Wageboard recommendations.

The demonstration was held near the state assembly and secretariat in response to the nation-wide protest call given by the Confederation of Newspaper and News Agency Employees` Organisations.

Protesting against the delay in notification of the Wage Board in a novel way, the demonstrators covered their faces with newspapers to convey the message that they feel ashamed for being paid low salary.

During the three-hour dharna the protesters carried placards which read: "Approve and Notify Wage Board awards", "Don`t delay Wage Board awards", "We want justice. Revise our pay scale" etc.

The Wage Board chaired by Justice G R Majithia had submitted its report to the UPA government way back on December 31, 2010 but little action has been taken for its implementation, veteran journalists told the gathering comprising staff of various newspapers as well as PTI and UNI.

Among others, senior journalists Barendra Krushna Dhal, Prasant Patnaik and Ramesh Mohanty spoke regarding the hardship being faced by the journalists and employees due to inordinate delay in notifying the awards.

Later, a five-member delegation met governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention in the matter and favourably recommend to the centre for notification of Wage Boards.

"The Governor gave us a patient hearing and expressed his solidarity with our cause after going through the content of the memorandum. He assured us that he would take up the matter with the Centre for notifying the wage board awards", a member of the delegation said.
